Research Interests

Experimental Physics

Roberto Cerbino is a Full Professor of Experimental Soft Matter Physics at the University of Vienna. He previously held positions at the University of Milan, where he was an Associate Professor and researcher, and completed postdoctoral work in Milan and Fribourg. He has also been a visiting researcher in Ottawa and Lyon. His research focuses on microscopy, phase imaging, X-ray metrology, and rheology. He has contributed significantly to understanding cytoskeletal dynamics, phase transitions in ribonucleoprotein granules, and liquid-liquid phase separation in DNA damage response. His work also explores collective cell motility, unjamming via flocking, and its implications for cancer research. Additionally, he has studied fluctuations and hydrodynamic instabilities in non-equilibrium systems and complex fluids. Cerbino has extensive experience with space experiments and has published over 90 peer-reviewed articles, five book chapters, and two textbooks. His research has had a major impact on soft matter physics and biophysics.
